DUNKIRK, New York — The Dunkirk City School District is mourning the loss of Danielle Russell, a beloved principal whose passing has left a deep impact on students, staff, and families across the community.
Superintendent Brian Swatland confirmed the heartbreaking news, describing Russell as a devoted and caring leader who was deeply committed to her school community. She served as principal of School 5 and previously held roles as principal of School 7 and Director of Special Education after joining the district in 2021.
Russell was widely known for her compassionate approach to education, emphasizing not only academic success but also emotional well-being and a sense of belonging among her students. Her leadership helped foster a supportive environment where students felt seen, heard, and encouraged to grow.
Her passing comes after she had taken a leave of absence in March to focus on her health. The loss has been felt deeply throughout Dunkirk, with the district providing counseling and support services to help students and staff cope with the grief.
In honor of her legacy, Russell’s family has established a GoFundMe initiative to create an education-based scholarship in her name, ensuring her passion for learning continues to inspire future generations.
As the community comes together in mourning, Danielle Russell is remembered for her kindness, leadership, and the lasting difference she made in the lives of so many. Her legacy will live on through the students she guided and the school community she helped build.
