NORTHFIELD, New Hampshire — The community is mourning the tragic death of 27-year-old Megan L. Whiting, who was fatally shot during an officer-involved incident early Monday morning.
According to authorities, officers from the Northfield Police Department and the Tilton Police Department responded around 12:12 a.m. on April 6, 2026, to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at an apartment on Vine Street.
Police say the caller reported that Whiting was assaulting another resident with a fire extinguisher, causing property damage and breaking a window. When officers arrived, they encountered Whiting armed with a knife and standing close to an injured female resident.
Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the situation escalated, and an officer discharged their firearm, striking Whiting. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. Authorities confirmed that no other civilians or officers were physically injured during the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the identity of the officer involved has not yet been released pending further review.
Whiting’s sudden and tragic passing has left family, friends, and the Northfield community in shock, as they come to terms with the loss of a young life under devastating circumstances.
