NEW YORK — The official cause of death for acclaimed music producer Sidney “Omen” Brown has been revealed nearly seven months after he was found dead in his East Harlem apartment. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Brown, 49, died of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a heart condition caused by plaque buildup in the arteries. His death was ruled natural.
Brown was discovered on September 13, 2025, after relatives checked on him when he missed a scheduled DJ set at Barawine Harlem, where he had been a fixture for over a decade. Family members described his passing as sudden, noting that Brown had been “holistic and healthy,” making the loss especially shocking.
Professionally known as Omen, Brown was a prominent figure in hip-hop, R&B, and soul, producing tracks for Memphis Bleek, Amil, Fabolous, Mýa, Redman, and Keith Murray. He earned his first Grammy for Ludacris’ Release Therapy in 2007 and later worked closely with Drake and Beyoncé, including production on her 2013 self-titled album track “Mine.” His final credited production work was on Action Bronson’s Mr. Wonderful in 2015.
Nicole Iris Brown, his sister, said the family has found some peace knowing there was “no foul play or nefarious things” involved in his death. Celebrations of his life were held at venues where he had worked, and another tribute is planned for what would have been his 50th birthday in August.
Sidney Brown’s contributions behind the scenes helped shape decades of music, leaving a lasting legacy in the industry.
